Acne

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Although considered a disease of teenagers, a growing number of adult women suffer from acne. While not a life threatening disease, treatment is important to prevent and treat scarring and boost self-esteem.

Acne presents as a combination of blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules and cysts. Hormones, stress and make-up all contribute to acne flare-ups. An acne lesion starts as a pore clogged with sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. When normal skin bacteria, p.acnes, get inside the clog the pore becomes inflamed and acne lesions result.

Acne treatments include topical medications, oral antibiotics, birth control pills and Accutane. We also offer photodynamic therapy (blue light treatment) as a helpful adjunct to standard treatment.
